people continue that journey. >> the names of all the newtown victims were read and a candle was lit for each of them. another vigil is planned at 6:00 tonight at amaral park in pleasanton. well, this morning a more detailed picture is emerging of the gunman who killed more than two dozen people. acquaintances of adam lanza was smart but his mother who was also killed told friends he had a mental disability. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in our newsroom with more. reporter: a man who babysat for the family when adam was 10 said nancy lanza told him to supervise her son at all times and never turn his back on him. lanza reportedly had no close friends in school. the gunman was taking class at western connecticut state university at the same time he was in high school and was homeschooled by his mother, who told friends he had asperger's syndrome. friends of the gunman said he was bright but painfully

awkward. >> on one side he did something unspeakable. on the other, that's not how i remember him. i remember him as a nice kid who sat near me in class and we joked and laughed. >> investigators are digging into his gun and computer use. at lanza's home they found smashed computers. investigators hope e-mails and web searches will lead them to a possible motive for friday's massacre. cate caugiran, cbs 5. a man is in jail after he outlined plans to copy the school massacre. 18-year-old sergio cabada of suisun city faces felony charges of making criminal threats. fairfield police got a tip he made the comments online supporting the connecticut gunman. investigators served a search warrant on his residence yesterday yesterday. they say they seized some items in order to prevent future acts of violence. and students returned to

class in newtown, connecticut, today except for those sandy hook elementary school students. cbs news's marley hall has more from newtown. >> reporter: it's back to school today for the children of newtown, connecticut. with one exception, the students of sandy hook elementary. >> which one -- >> reporter: kenneth canfield is a fourth grader at sandy hook. he was there that tragic day. >> he heard screaming and gunshots. the room he was in was being banged on by the gunman. >> reporter: kenneth and his classmates won't be returning to sandy hook elementary school. when they do go back, they will attend chalk hill school in nearby monroe. >> he said won't go back unless there's a police officer at every door. >> reporter: the grieving continues here in newtown. there will be two more funerals today when james mattioli and jessica rekos will be laid to rest. the first two funerals were held monday when 6-year-old noah pozner and jack pinto were remembered. >> you shouldn't be at a 6-year-

old's funeral. i mean, this is a devastating event and it's heartbreaking as it is. it just keeps getting worse. >> reporter: noah pozner was described as smart, caring and rambunctious. jack pinto loved the new york giants. he was buried in the jersey his favorite player, victor cruz. >> there were little stories about jack being in heaven tossing footballs with the angels and knocking halos off their head and everyone got a chuckle out of that. >> reporter: honan funeral home in newtown will hold 11 funerals between now and christmas. marly hall for cbs news, newtown, connecticut. some california lawmakers say it's time for new state laws in hope of preventing tragedies like the one in connecticut. among them is leland yee a local, state senator. he wants to reintroduce a bullet button ban which failed last year. bullet buttons allow gun users to get around the state ban on

detachable magazines. >> it is as if we do not have an assault weapons ban in the state of california. with the bullet button assault rifle, what you can do is buy a magnet and you can easily load and unload these magazines. >> a local gun advocate says bans on certain weapons or parts are not good ways to prevent violence. gene hoffman the chairman of cal gun does support more background checks and mental health evaluations. well, there are new signs of increased support for gun control. a cbs news poll taken after the shootings finds 57% of americans think gun laws should be strict the highest number in a decade. but 66% say at the same time when people are asked about what happened in newtown, that percentage said that tougher gun laws would have little to no effect on preventing that incident of. president obama could have

is that the temperature is really cold outside. temperatures are on average about 10 degrees cooler than what we saw yesterday. check out the north bay readings. 38 degrees in santa rosa. 40 in concord. 42 in livermore. so yeah, as you step outside you'll really notice the difference. it's because of an area of low pressure bringing cold breezy conditions for the most part the rain that we saw yesterday having moved east. we could still see a few lingering showers mainly along the coast. the real rain returns later this week. the biggest story will be the cool temperatures and breezes. today the readings will struggle to get out of the low 50s. temperatures anywhere from four to seven degrees below by the afternoon what we saw yesterday. we'll have much more on your seven-day forecast talk more about the rain making a return to the bay area. in the meantime gianna has the latest on the traffic conditions. >> we will start with the bay

stretch of road along marsh creek flowed clayton. this is video from the scene. they have closed that part of the road. the contra costa county public works department says the road is compromised because of rain. they say a culvert failed. it's closed between deer valley and pine lane. only local traffic gets through. they don't know when the road can reopen because they need to identify the extent of the damage. what's going to happen this morning is that more maintenance crews will come out. they will do some tests and they will see what they can do to kept that road secure. reporting live in clayton, elissa harrington, cbs 5. a candlelight vigil is planned for friday night in concord for a high school senior killed in san francisco's bayview district. 17-year-old montreal blakely was shot about 10 p.m. saturday night. he had a high grade point average and was a starting defensive back on the football team at concord high school. police say the investigation is ongoing. so far, there are no arrests.

a pharmacy worker is being treated for a leg wound after an attempted robbery in san francisco. it happened about 6:30 last night at a pharmacy on cesar chavez street. police are looking for the two would-be robbers and a third suspect who drove the getaway car. the man convicted of killing two people at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza is expected to be sentenced today. 49-year-old nathan burris faces the death penalty. he shot and killed his ex- girlfriend a toll plaza worker and her friend a bus driver back in 2009. the holiday shopping. >> skin had a bit too much excitement in san francisco as crews battled a small fire. smoke was coming from the roof and upper floors. the source turned out to be a flue from a restaurant. 5:11. coming up, youtube releases its list of the top videos of 2013. >> plus 6 million credit card

5 this morning. 5:14. >> let's check the roads. i'm sure the cars are starting to get out there, right? >> they sure are. in fact, it's a much better story today than yesterday. yesterday we had all that wet weather and roadways were slick. but so far just a couple of accidents out there and chp is clearing them quickly. accidents south 17 at 9 blocking one lane but that should be on the right shoulder shortly. just seeing some slight delays approaching the scene. 17 north, no problems. north 101 through san jose, nice ride so far. 280 checking in problem-free and no delays right now on guadalupe parkway. elsewhere, we do have some roadwork this morning. westbound 237, 880 to 101, so far no delays there. silverado trail at hardman, car hit the guardrail. south 101 out of marin near sir francis drake we have reports

of roadwork there. looks like traffic slow as you approach the scene. once you get to the golden gate bridge, though, not showing any delays. in fact, traffic looks good into san francisco. an easy 14-minute ride between 580 to the golden gate bridge toll plaza. and no delays right now on any surface streets inside san francisco. northbound 880 looking good. southbound, as well. we have some roadwork reported near fruitvale but again it is not really causing delays as of yet. no accidents to report on 880. now we have some brake lights through antioch. no construction just typical slowing westbound highway 4. looks like speeds dipping under about 40 miles per hour. looks a lot better though once you get into pittsburg. all the way towards the eastshore freeway, no delays to report right now. and, of course, mass transit always a good choice. bart, ace, muni, caltrain and your ferries, everything right on time. no delays to report for any of our mass transit. that's traffic. here's elizabeth. >> thank you. for the most part the rain is cleared. the biggest story today is once again the temperatures. and they are anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees cooler than time

police department. some residents are asking the town council to enact a law to prohibit gun sales or require a conditional use permit. a prominent seller of guns nationwide dick sporting goods is pulling certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles off its shelves. the retailer says it's also removing all guns from its store closest to the site of friday's massacre. dick's says it is taking those measures out of respect for the victims and their families but it's not clear how long they will be in effect. for more on the elementary school tragedy, you can go to our website, cbssf.com. well, get ready to turn blue. the bay area in for the big chill. according to elizabeth anyway, who is in this morning for lawrence. >> do you believe me? yeah. now the wreck of a soviet submarine has been found in the baltic sea. swedish military officials say the sub was found in the swedish economic zone southeast of the baltic island of oland. i didn't know the swedish economic zone was at the bottom of the sea. it was an area the german forces mined during the war t appears the sub was blown apart by a mine late in 1941. and with the year winding down time running out to make or save money on your retirement account. jill schlesinger, editor at large for cbsmoneywatch.com, is here to explain. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning. >> all right. so you say this could be a good year to convert to a roth ira? why is that? >> well, remember that a conversion requires that you pay the tax due on your retirement as of right now instead of in the future. now, here's the advantage. the amount subject to tax would likely be taxed at a lower rate today than in the future. that's because analysts say that tax rates are probably

going to go up for everyone in the future. so this would ensure that you pay lower tax today and your future distributions are tax- free. it doesn't work for everybody. whether or not a conversion makes sense depends on factors, maybe your age, when you need your money and whether you can pay the tax due with nonretirement funds but this is a good year to run the numbers. it may make sense for you. >> jill, what about employer- based plans? >> reporter: well, a lot of us have 401(k)s and 403b plans. we haven't maximized them. maybe if you can squeeze more money out a lot of employs let you put a little extra in before the end of the year. remember, unlike iras, the deadline for funding a 401(k) or 403b is december 31. this year, you're limited to $17,000 per person, 22-5 if you are over 50. so this is pretty good. you get to save for a future goal and reduce your current tax bill. >> yeah. there you go. >> for those already retired, a deadline looms, right? >> yes. pay attention.

samsung illegally used apple technology in some of the phones. samsung was offered to pay apple $1 billion as a result of that patent case. but the judge said banning samsung from selling certain phones would be too broad a punishment. it's 5:46. there is the music! [ laughter ] >> very dramatic, huh? >> it is dramatic. da da da da da da! >> how about the weather, is that grammatic ? >> it's a little dramatic this morning. it's going to be more dramatic by tomorrow morning. we have freeze advisories in effect for the north bay but for right now, yeah, it's definitely chilly outside. quite a bit cooler in fact than what we saw out the door yet at the same time. we are seeing a lot of 30s and 40s, a few clouds out along the coast. and it's going to be breezy by this afternoon. we are going to see a little bit more sunshine so for the most part the rain is cleared but these temperatures are going to struggle to get out of the 50s and right now those readings are particularly cool. we are seeing more than 20 degrees in some spots in the north bay cooler at this time than we saw yesterday.

low pressure a cool air mass along the bay area. a few lingering low clouds and we could see sprinkles along the coast by this afternoon but not by much. the real next rain system comes later on this week. so we'll time it out here with futurecast. once again, it's a little unsettled along the coast but then things clear not most part and it's actually that clearing weather that's bringing us some pretty cool temperatures no cloud cover to keep us warm by this time tomorrow morning. that's when we have those freeze warnings and the frost advisories already in effect. so you're going to want to take care for tomorrow. if you are doing any traveling at sfo today, not expecting to see any delays. we have some morning clouds partly cloudy, cool, high of about 53 degrees by san bruno and checking some travel conditions across the country, plenty of sunshine, mid-70s in houston. got a mix of rain and snow in chicago and rainy conditions in new york with temperatures in the mid-50s. we are seeing a lot of 50s here, as well. once again 55 in oakland by this afternoon.

el camino real. elsewhere on the road, this morning, all lanes are blocked in napa due to this accident where a vehicle hit the guardrail. silverado trail at hardman has been there for quite some time. lots of activity around the area. also, antioch seeing brake lights both directions not just westbound. westbound 4 slow and go through there. eastbound seeing some slight delays. no roadwork this morning but a few brake lights. gets better though as you work your way toward the eastshore freeway. and we have some early-morning roadwork along 101 through marin county, that's wrapped up. once you get to the golden gate bridge not showing any delays in fact traffic looks good into san francisco. that's a look at your morning drive. thank you. a 9-year-old girl in stockton has died from bacterial meningitis. the fourth grader jewell knight became sick last thursday with flu-like symptoms. her parents took her to a pediatrician who sent her home.

her condition got worse. >> she came out of her room delirious and wasn't looking good. i knew something was wrong with her. so we took her immediately to the hospital. and then after she got to the hospital, she was running a 105, 106 temperature. >> terrible. she was life-flighted to children's hospital in oakland. within hours she was declared dead. now jewel's elementary school is making sure that nobody came in direct contact with her. the title of the world's oldest person has passed from a woman in iowa to a man in japan. dina manfredina died yesterday at a retirement center in des moines. she was 115 which means if you do the math she was born in the 19th century. now a man in japan who is 15 days younger is the oldest on the planet. he lived near kyoto and was born on, get this april 19th, 1897. >> wow. >> it always amazes me because what they have seen in their
